While the name Picture Styles may sound like an optional feature on the XSi 450D, it's important because it determines how the camera delivers tonal curves, color rendering, color saturation, and sharpness in the final image. The Picture Style Editor is deceptively simple, but it offers powerful and exact control over the style for example, color specifications and minute adjustments to hue, saturation, luminosity, and gamma (tonal curve) characteristics. Then you save the changes as a Picture Style file (.PF2), and use the EOS Utility to register the file in the camera and apply it to images. Using a RAW image you've captured, you can apply a Picture Style and make changes to the style while watching the effect of the changes as you work. With the 40D, Canon offers a more precise and certainly more efficient approach in the new Picture Style Editor program, included on the EOS Digital Solution Disk. But that approach is experimental You set the style, capture the image, and then check the results on the computer until you get the results you want. One approach to getting Picture Styles that are exactly to your liking is to set or modify one of the styles provided in the camera.
